If you’ve been thinking about getting a tummy tuck, there’s no better time than the fall to schedule your surgery. Not only does autumn’s cooler weather offer a more comfortable healing environment, but this season also provides practical benefits for anyone looking to work on their figure before the next swimsuit season rolls around.
Here, Dr. Bunch explains some of the top reasons why fall is the best time for a tummy tuck.
1. Cooler Weather Makes for a Comfier Recovery
After your tummy tuck, expect to take at least 2 to 3 weeks off of work to rest and recover at home. It can take up to 6 weeks before you are able to return to mild physical activity. During this time, Dr. Bunch will ask you to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and improve your body’s healing process.
While you can recover from a tummy tuck any time of year, the cooler fall weather makes it more comfortable to cozy inside with the added layer of your compression garment. Plus, you probably won’t feel as though you’re missing out on outdoor fun when recovering in the cooler months.
2. It’s Easier to Avoid the Sun In the Fall
You will also need to avoid sun exposure while you recover from your tummy tuck to minimize scarring and optimize the healing process. Most people find that staying out of the sun during the fall and winter is a whole lot easier than trying to avoid it during the spring and summer, making this time a year ideal to schedule plastic surgery.
3. Extra Layers Add Coverage
Although you’ll be on light duty for several weeks after your tummy tuck, you can gradually begin going back to work or socializing as you start to feel better and better. That said, Dr. Bunch recommends that his patients wear their compression garments for at least 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. The good news, however, is that warmer fall layers like sweaters and jackets can help to conceal your compression garment while you may be out in public during your tummy tuck recovery.
4. The Kids Are Back In School
For many parents, fall brings a shift in routine as the kids head back to school, which often means that you may have a bit more time for yourself this time of year. If you don’t have children, fall still tends to be a less busy time overall, with fewer trips planned and more flexibility at work. This can translate into extra downtime for resting and healing properly after your tummy tuck.
5. You’ll See Results In Time for Summer
Perhaps the best reason to have a tummy tuck in the fall is that you’ll be fully healed and ready to flaunt your results by the time summer rolls around. It typically takes several months for swelling to subside and for your final tummy tuck results to fully develop. By planning your tummy tuck in the fall, you’ll give yourself plenty of time to heal and enjoy your smooth, toned physique just in time for next summer’s bikini season.
