What is the difference between a Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty?
By Dr. Ross Bunch – Plastic Surgery of Tuscaloosa
The nose plays an important role in both appearance and function. Some patients come to me seeking cosmetic refinement, while others want to correct breathing issues. Two of the most common procedures I perform are rhinoplasty and septoplasty. While they’re often confused or mentioned together, these surgeries address very different concerns. Let’s break them down.
What Is a Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, sometimes called a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that focuses on the external appearance of the nose. My patients often consider rhinoplasty when they feel their nose doesn’t fit their facial proportions or when they’re unhappy with certain features.
Common Reasons Patients Choose Rhinoplasty:
- A hump or bump on the bridge of the nose
- A drooping, bulbous, or upturned nasal tip
- Nostrils that are too wide or asymmetrical
- A nose that feels too large, too small, or disproportionate to the face
- Correcting changes caused by trauma or injury
The goal of rhinoplasty is to bring balance and harmony to your facial features while preserving a natural look. This is a highly individualized surgery. What works for one patient may not be right for another.
What Is a Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a functional procedure designed to improve breathing by correcting a deviated septum. The septum is the thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates the two nostrils. When it’s deviated or crooked, it can block airflow through one or both nasal passages.
Symptoms of a Deviated Septum May Include:
- Chronic nasal congestion (especially on one side)
- Frequent sinus infections
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Nosebleeds
- Sleep disturbances due to restricted airflow
During septoplasty, I straighten the septum and remove any obstructions that are affecting your airway. Unlike rhinoplasty, this surgery does not typically change the external appearance of your nose. It focuses entirely on function.

Can They Be Combined?
Yes—many patients benefit from combining rhinoplasty and septoplasty, a procedure sometimes called a septorhinoplasty. This approach addresses both appearance and breathing in a single surgery. For example, if a patient has a deviated septum and also wants a smoother nasal bridge or a refined tip, combining the two procedures can provide the most complete result.
Recovery Expectations
- Rhinoplasty
- Downtime: 1–2 weeks off work or school
- Bruising and swelling peak in the first week
- Final results continue to refine over 6–12 months
- Septoplasty
- Downtime: About 1 week
- Minimal bruising, swelling mostly internal
- Breathing improvements noticeable within weeks
When procedures are combined, recovery times may overlap, with slightly more swelling than septoplasty alone but manageable with proper aftercare.
Which Procedure Is Right for You?
The right choice depends on your priorities:
- If you’re unhappy with the look of your nose, rhinoplasty may be the best option.
- If you’re struggling with chronic breathing issues, septoplasty may provide relief.
- If you want to address both appearance and function, a combined approach might be ideal.
During your consultation, I’ll examine your anatomy, listen to your goals, and create a surgical plan that’s personalized for you.
