Breast Implant Options

Breast Implant Options at Plastic Surgery of Tuscaloosa

Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures today in the United States. However, that does not mean that it is a ‘cookie cutter’ procedure that is the same for each patient. The goal of every breast augmentation surgery is to create a customized surgical plan designed to ensure a procedure is just right for you based on your anatomical measurements, amount of native breast tissue, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Perhaps one of the most critical decisions you will face during the planning phase is the choice of breast implants. Dr. Ross Bunch is extremely aware of how important it is for you to get the look and contour you desire and strives to ensure you are well-informed about all of the implant options available to you, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of each one.

At Plastic Surgery of Tuscaloosa in Tuscaloosa, AL, we offer a myriad of options for your breast implant selection process. Dr. Ross Bunch will make recommendations for you based on your aesthetic goals and specific body composition. Yet he is also conscious of the fact that this decision can be overwhelming and is there to guide and help you every step of the way. All breast implants have a durable elastomer silicone shell. The differences lie in the fill, size, shape and profile of the implants. This page is dedicated to helping you understand the nuances of each choice you will make once you decide to proceed with breast implant surgery.

What are my Breast Implant choices?

Choosing the right breast implant for your frame can be confusing given the number of options there are out there today. There are two important factors to contemplate when you are trying to choose which type of implant is right for you: your anatomy and the final look you want to achieve. The following are elements that should be taken into consideration when making this decision:

Size: The size of the implant you choose is based on cubic centimeters (cc’s). This is what you would probably think of when it comes to cup size or the final size of your augmented breasts. Some implants come in a variety of pre-filled sizes, while others can be custom-filled to achieve your goals.

Shape: Implants generally come in two shapes: round or teardrop (anatomical). Round implants are used more commonly than teardrop-shaped ones, but some patients prefer the look of teardrop-shaped implants because it more closely resembles the shape of the natural breast.

Profile: The profile of the implant refers to amount of projection it has, or how far the breast will protrude from the chest. Implants can have low, moderate, high, or ultra-high projection, depending on what you desire.

Texture: Most breast implants have a smooth shell, but there are also those that have a rough, or textured, outer covering. These are sometimes used in patients who have had recurrent capsular contracture (scar formation around the implant), as it has been known to lessen the probability it will occur again in the future.

Types of Implants we offer

Implants can be filled with either saline or silicone gel:

  • Saline Implants: Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water. The shell is placed empty into the breast pocket and is filled through a valve that seals automatically. Since they are not pre-filled, it allows for adjusting of volume when needed.
  • Silicone Gel Implants: Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel material that feels a bit more like natural breast tissue. The more natural look and feel, along with less incidence of rippling (visible wrinkling) of the implant, are the main reasons patients will opt for silicone implants.
