Neck Lift

Banish Neck Wrinkles for a More Youthful You!

Although most of us are conditioned to protect our faces from the effects of aging with regular application of sunscreen and moisturizers, all too often we forget to do the same with the delicate skin of the neck. Unfortunately, the elasticity of the skin on the neck can deteriorate due to sun exposure, aging, and/or genetic factors. And over time, your neckline can start to sag and give way to jowls, wrinkles, and even muscle banding, which can create unappealing contours along the length of the neck. If you’re tired of looking in the mirror at a neck that is revealing the signs of age, a neck lift, or rhytidectomy, is an excellent way to tighten and rejuvenate your neck for a fresh, youthful appearance.

If you’re concerned about the appearance of your neck, a consultation at Plastic Surgery of Tuscaloosa can help you decide if rhytidectomy is right for you. Our aesthetic surgical center, conveniently located in the North River area of Tuscaloosa, offers a refined, sophisticated, and discrete environment where we hope you will feel comfortable exploring your aesthetic goals. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ross Bunch, MD will listen carefully to your aesthetic needs and develop a customized and unique treatment plan designed to achieve your goals while maintaining a focus on your comfort and safety.

A neck lift may be a good option for patients who are concerned about:

  • Skin laxity in the lower face
  • Jowls, or fat deposits along the jaw line
  • Neck skin that is loose or wrinkled
  • Muscle banding, or a “turkey neck” appearance
  • A neck that appears to be aging more rapidly than the face

If you’re ready to do something about the effects of an aging neck, a surgical neck lift can be an excellent option, and may be able to provide the rejuvenation you have been seeking.

What to Expect with Neck Surgery

Depending on your condition and aesthetic goals, a neck lift may involve a traditional incision, which starts just above the ear, tracing along the ear contour and ending within the hairline behind the ear. This will allow the fat, skin, and muscle to be carefully contoured and trimmed back to create a sleek and youthful appearance. Alternately, a more limited incision can be made around the ear, which is smaller in size than the traditional neck lift incision, and therefore involves less time for recovery. However, with a limited incision, the range of cosmetic possibilities is also more limited, and may not be appropriate depending on your treatment goals. An additional incision may be made under the chin to allow for liposuction, reducing the appearance of a double chin or jowls.

Typically, a neck lift will be performed under IV or general anesthesia, and most patients are able to return home the same day. You should plan to have a family member or friend available to drive you home, and to help you during the first couple days following surgery. A dressing will typically be worn during the first recovery stages, and a drain may have been installed at the surgical site to help reduce swelling and fluid build-up. It’s important to keep your head elevated during this time, and avoid any strenuous exercise. Any bandages and drains will typically be removed several days following surgery.

Neck lifts are often performed along with other procedures, such as a face lift or brow lift and therefore recovery times can vary greatly. Most patients will be able to return to their normal daily activities within two weeks, but full recovery may take roughly 2-3 months. The effects of your neck lift will be immediately evident, and we hope that you will be delighted by the years that this procedure strips away from your overall appearance, leaving you with sleek, youthful neck contours and a fresh burst of self-confidence.
