Don’t Let The Hands of Time Affect Your Most Personal Areas

Many of the signs of getting older are easily visible: lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth or the slow accumulation of unsightly bulges around the mid-section, for example. Yet while other effects of aging, gravity, childbirth, and hormonal changes are less obvious, they may be just as problematic. Unforeseen changes to the labia, such as sagging, asymmetry, and/or enlargement, can be embarrassing and even cause physical discomfort during physical activity or sexual intercourse.

Labia Majora Augmentation

The labia majora is the medical term for the outer lips of the vulva, the most visible part of the female genitalia. We don’t often think about how age, childbirth, and/or hormonal changes impact these delicate and private areas of our body. Yet it may surprise us to learn that loss of volume to the labia majora is as common as the appearance of crow’s feet or laugh lines. For some women, the loss of fullness simply gives the genital area a wrinkled, deflated appearance, but for others, it can lead to more serious problems including discomfort during sexual intercourse.

At Plastic Surgery of Tuscaloosa in Tuscaloosa, AL, Board certified plastic surgery Dr. Ross Bunch offers an advanced technique known as labia majora augmentation with fat grafting to restore a full, healthy, youthful-looking labia majora. This minimally-invasive technique involves harvesting fatty tissue from areas of the body with excess fat (such as the abdomen or thigh) and transferring it to the labia majora. The introduction of your body’s own natural tissue can enhance the size and shape of the labia majora, create a more proportional and pleasing shape, and improve the firmness of this intimate area. While it can be embarrassing to discuss at first, the youthful results of this simple procedure are well worth it!

What is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty (also known as vaginal lip reduction, labia rejuvenation, or labia reduction) is an advanced surgical procedure designed to correct unevenness, sagging, and/or elongation of the labia minora (inner lips of the vulva) and/or labia majora (outer lips of the vulva).

Why have a labiaplasty?

The goal of this intimate procedure is to eliminate stretched tissue around the labia and reshape the lips of the vulva, creating a thinner, smaller, more aesthetically pleasing labia. Tightening and reshaping these delicate tissues can also reduce discomfort and embarrassing physical complications, and in some cases even increase sexual sensitivity by removing excess tissue blocking the clitoris.

Choose Dr. Ross Bunch for your Labiaplasty

We understand that this is a highly personal area of the body and can be difficult to discuss. Yet at the warming, welcoming environment at Plastic Surgery of Tuscaloosa in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, we hope that you will feel 100% comfortable discussing concerns about these types of personal issues, including changes to your labia and the impact these changing are having on your active lifestyle. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ross Bunch is an experienced plastic surgeon with surgical skill, detailed anatomical knowledge, and commitment to excellence required to ensure that this intricate and delicate procedure is performed safely, comfortably, and successfully as possible.

Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty involves a highly personal and sensitive area of the body and therefore many patients are hesitant to pursue it due to concerns about the potential for discomfort. In fact, our patients are surprised at just how little discomfort they experience during and after this procedure. Most labiaplasty procedures can be performed under light anesthesia and require only about 1-2 hours to complete. The incisions required to remove excess tissue and/or re-sculpt existing tissue are extremely small and closed with dissolvable sutures.

Recovery after Labiaplasty

Most patients require about 3-4 days of recovery time before returning to work and most normal activities, although we usually ask patients to refrain from sexual intercourse for about 3-4 weeks to ensure complete healing.

Fat Transfer to the Labia Majora: A Simple Two-Step Process

A typical labia majora augmentation with fat grafting is a simple, two-step procedure that can take between about 30 minutes, unless combined with a more significant liposculpture or other body shaping procedure.

The Labia Augmentation Process

First, fatty tissue is harvested from a donor site with few extra curves, usually the thigh or the abdomen, using tumescent liposuction. A special mixture of local anesthetic and adrenaline—tumescent fluid—is injected into the donor site to numb the area, control bleeding, and liquefy the fatty tissue so it is easy to remove. Then, the fat is gently suctioned out of the body through a small cannula.

Second, the fatty tissue is sterilized and purified to ensure that it is safe to reinject into the body. Using very fine gauge needles, the fat is carefully and precisely injected into the labia majora then molded into an aesthetically pleasing shape.

What To Expect After Labia Augmentation

Some patients may be asked to wear a special compression garment for up to a month after the procedure to ensure the fat stays in the appropriate shape while it is incorporated into the body during the healing process.
Optimal results will become visible several weeks after the procedure as the new, enhanced fatty tissue is molded into your existing tissue.

When Can I Return To Normal Activity After Labia Augmentation?

We usually suggest avoiding strenuous and high-impact activity, especially running and sexual intercourse, for at least six weeks.

Side Effects of Labia Augmentation

As with all minimally-invasive procedures, most patients experience some minor and temporary side effects such as bruising, swelling, and discomfort, which can be alleviated with pain medication.
