Nose Surgery

The Center of Beauty—the Nose

When you think about it, the nose really occupies prime facial real estate—right in the center of everything. Sometimes, unfortunately, a face that is truly beautiful feels somehow out of harmony with this central feature—whether it’s too large, too wide, too bulbous, or features aesthetically unpleasing bumps or arches. In other cases, the nose may have sustained injury that gives it a crooked or broken appearance, and may even impair its functionality. These defects can often have a serious impact on self-confidence and well-being, impeding both social and professional relationships. No matter the nature or degree of your concern, nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, is an excellent option for bringing the nose back into harmony with the face, providing a graceful, elegant look that will increase your confidence and self-esteem.

If you’re concerned about the appearance of your nose, a consultation at Plastic Surgery of Tuscaloosa can help you decide if rhinoplasty is right for you. Our aesthetic surgical center is located in the North River area of Tuscaloosa and offers a refined, sophisticated, discrete environment where we hope you will feel absolutely comfortable discussing any and all concerns about the appearance and/or functionality of your nose. Dr. Ross Bunch, MD, Board certified plastic surgeon, will listen carefully to your aesthetic needs and develop a treatment plan to achieve your desired goals while maintaining a focus on comfort and safety. Nose surgery may be a good option for you if you’re concerned about:

  • An overly large nose
  • A deviated septum
  • Wide or flaring nostrils
  • Tip of the nose that is bulbous or misshapen
  • An unusually wide or narrow bridge of the nose
  • A nose with unsightly bumps or dips along the bridge
  • A crooked nose, or nose that shows damage from past injury

No matter the nature of your concern about the appearance of your nose, we can guide you towards a treatment plan that will help you attain a beautiful and harmonious profile, and all the renewed confidence that comes with it.

What is Involved with Nose Surgery?

Everybody’s face is completely unique, and as a result, no two nose surgery procedures will be exactly alike. Our goal is to help you understand how changes to your nose will impact your facial contours and overall appearance and work with you to create a custom-tailored surgical plan based on your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. However, regardless of the specific details of your individual treatment plan, rhinoplasty is significant surgery, performed under IV or general anesthesia. Incisions are typically made either within the interior of the nostrils, or in the column of skin between the nostrils, known as the columella. The shape of the nose can then be delicately contoured, adding or removing volume and dimension according to your detailed treatment plan. With a new underlying structure in place, the skin is then re-draped over the cartilage and fastened into place with supports to aid in the critical first few days of the healing process.

Most patients are released from the hospital the same day as their surgery. It is important to make sure that you have someone to drive you home from the hospital and to help you during the first critical days of healing. You will need plenty of rest, maintaining elevation of the head as much as possible. You can expect to experience some post-surgical swelling and bruising of the face, which will typically subside within the first week. Many patients also experience increased congestion as the surgical site heals and fluids drain. Pain medications are available to ensure your comfort following surgery, and many patients find that cold compresses also provide some measure of relief. Typically, the sutures, dressings, and any support structures will be removed 5-10 days following surgery, and after about two weeks, you can expect to return to your normal daily activities.
